A Short Exchange of Prayer

Someone Sneezed—Who Says What?

Someone sneezed in a waiting room. One person offered a familiar English response; everyone else stayed silent. The Sunnah teaches a meaningful exchange: the person who sneezes says “Alhamdulillah”—all praise is for God. A listener replies “Yarhamuk Allah”—may God have mercy on you.

The first person then says “Yahdikum Allah wa yuslihu balakum”—may God guide you and set your affairs right. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught this sequence. (Sahih al-Bukhari: 6224) Learn the three phrases today, ready for the next sneeze.

Raw Chicken: Cook It, Don’t Wash It

You Rinsed the Chicken—Where Did the Germs Go?

Raw chicken was rinsed under the tap. The nearby salad and sink still looked clean. Yet splashing water can carry harmful bacteria to hands, the sink, chopping boards, utensils and ready-to-eat food. Washing does not safely remove these germs; thorough cooking does.

Do not wash raw chicken. Transfer it straight from the pack to the cooking pan and cook it thoroughly. After handling it, wash your hands with soap and warm water. Promptly clean the knife, board, sink and other surfaces used during preparation.
